Happy Baptism of Our Lord! As always, I hope this finds you blessed and healthy.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meditation<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Our re-creation in baptism is an image of the Genesis creation, where the Spirit of God moved over the waters. Both Mark\u2019s gospel and the story in Acts make clear that it is the Spirit\u2019s movement that distinguishes Jesus\u2019 baptism from John\u2019s. The Spirit has come upon us as upon Jesus and the Ephesians, calling us God\u2019s beloved children and setting us on Jesus\u2019 mission to re-create the world in the image of God\u2019s vision of justice and peace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Confession and Forgiveness<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Blessed be the holy Trinity, \u2629 one God, whose voice is upon the waters, whose mercy is poured out upon all people, whose goodness cascades over all creation. Amen.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let us confess our sin, trusting in the abundant grace of God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Holy God,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

you search us and know us.<\/strong> You are acquainted with all our ways.<\/strong> We confess that our hearts are burdened by sin\u2014<\/strong> our own sins and the broken systems that bind us.<\/strong> We turn inward, failing to follow<\/strong> your outward way of love.<\/strong> We distrust those who are not like us.<\/strong> We exploit the earth and its resources<\/strong> and fail to consider generations to come.<\/strong> Forgive us, gracious God,<\/strong> for all we have done and left undone.<\/strong> Even before the words are on our tongues,<\/strong> you know them;<\/strong> receive them in your divine mercy.<\/strong> Amen.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

How vast is God\u2019s grace! Through the power and promise of \u2629 Christ Jesus, our sins are washed away and we are claimed as God\u2019s own beloved. Indeed, we are forgiven. In the wake of God\u2019s forgiveness, we are called to be the beloved community living out Christ\u2019s justice and the Spirit\u2019s reconciling peace. Amen.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prayer of the Day<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Holy God, creator of light and giver of goodness, your voice moves over the waters. Immerse us in your grace, and transform us by your Spirit, that we may follow after your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

First Reading: Genesis 1:1-5<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Out of chaos, God brings order. Out of the formless void, God brings light. This familiar story was good news for the Israelites, who experienced much chaos in their history. It remains good news for us. God created and continues to create new life.<\/em><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

1<\/sup>In the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth, 2<\/sup>the earth was a formless void and darkness covered the face of the deep, while a wind from God swept over the face of the waters. 3<\/sup>Then God said, \u201cLet there be light\u201d; and there was light. 4<\/sup>And God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness. 5<\/sup>God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Psalm: Psalm 29<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

\u20031<\/sup>Ascribe to the Lord, you gods,
\u2003\u2003ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.
\u20032<\/sup>Ascribe to the Lord the glory due God\u2019s name;<\/strong>

Second Reading: Acts 19:1-7<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In Ephesus, Paul encounters people who had received John\u2019s baptism of repentance but had never heard of the Holy Spirit or of baptism in the name of Jesus. After Paul baptizes them, the Holy Spirit comes upon them and empowers them with gifts of the Spirit.<\/em><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

1<\/sup>While Apollos was in Corinth, Paul passed through the interior regions and came to Ephesus, where he found some disciples. 2<\/sup>He said to them, \u201cDid you receive the Holy Spirit when you became believers?\u201d They replied, \u201cNo, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.\u201d 3<\/sup>Then he said, \u201cInto what then were you baptized?\u201d They answered, \u201cInto John\u2019s baptism.\u201d 4<\/sup>Paul said, \u201cJohn baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in the one who was to come after him, that is, in Jesus.\u201d 5<\/sup>On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 6<\/sup>When Paul had laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied\u20147<\/sup>altogether there were about twelve of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gospel: Mark 1:4-11<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Mark\u2019s gospel reports the story of Jesus\u2019 baptism with some irony: the one on whom the Spirit descends is himself the one who will baptize others with the Holy Spirit.<\/em><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

4<\/sup>John the baptizer appeared in the wilderness, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. 5<\/sup>And people from the whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem were going out to him, and were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. 6<\/sup>Now John was clothed with camel\u2019s hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. 7<\/sup>He proclaimed, \u201cThe one who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not worthy to stoop down and untie the thong of his sandals. 8<\/sup>I have baptized you with water; but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.\u201d

\u2003 9<\/sup>In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. 10<\/sup>And just as he was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens torn apart and the Spirit descending like a dove on him. 11<\/sup>And a voice came from heaven, \u201cYou are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Guided by Christ made known to the nations, let us offer our prayers for the church, the world, and all people in need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the church throughout the world and its leaders, that guided by the Holy Spirit they proclaim the forgiveness of sins, let us pray.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Have mercy, O God.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

For wilderness and water, wind and wild beasts, and all living things on earth, that God\u2019s goodness is revealed through creation and faithful stewards care for all God has made, let us pray.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Have mercy, O God.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the nations of the world and their leaders, for laborers busy both day and night, and for peacemakers amid strife, that God inspire all people to use their strength wisely, let us pray.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Have mercy, O God.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the sick and those who provide medical care, for the imprisoned and those who show them mercy, for the lonely and those who provide companionship, for all who suffer especially Ricky Lindquist; Tom, Pam, Mandy and Eddy Neu; Katy, Audrey, and Olivia Leyendecker; Susan Leyendecker; Helen Schubert; Greg, Judy, and Kristine Mayer; Mariah Pearson; and Dan Wolever: that God shower them with compassion, let us pray.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the congregation gathered here and there and everywhere, for students returning to school, for those seeking renewal in their daily work, that all the beloved of God experience grace and peace, let us pray.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Merciful God, hear the prayers of your people, spoken or silent, for the sake of the one who dwells among us, your Son, Jesus Christ our Savior.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
