Meditation<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

All the baptized have a calling in God\u2019s world. God calls not just pastors and deacons but also the youngest child, like Samuel. The story of the calling of Nathanael plays with the idea of place. Nathanael initially dismisses Jesus because he comes from Nazareth. But where we come from isn\u2019t important; it\u2019s where\u2014or rather whom\u2014we come to. Jesus refers to Jacob, who had a vision in a place he called \u201cthe house of God, and . . . the gate of heaven\u201d (Gen. 28:17). Jesus says he himself is the place where Nathanael will meet God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Confession and Forgiveness<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

.<\/em>Blessed be the holy Trinity, \u2629 one God, whose voice is upon the waters, whose mercy is poured out upon all people, whose goodness cascades over all creation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Amen.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let us confess our sin, trusting in the abundant grace of God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Holy God,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

you search us and know us.<\/strong> You are acquainted with all our ways.<\/strong> We confess that our hearts are burdened by sin\u2014<\/strong> our own sins and the broken systems that bind us.<\/strong> We turn inward, failing to follow<\/strong> your outward way of love.<\/strong> We distrust those who are not like us.<\/strong> We exploit the earth and its resources<\/strong> and fail to consider generations to come.<\/strong> Forgive us, gracious God,<\/strong> for all we have done and left undone.<\/strong> Even before the words are on our tongues,<\/strong> you know them;<\/strong> receive them in your divine mercy.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Amen.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

How vast is God\u2019s grace! Through the power and promise of \u2629 Christ Jesus, our sins are washed away and we are claimed as God\u2019s own beloved. Indeed, we are forgiven. In the wake of God\u2019s forgiveness, we are called to be the beloved community living out Christ\u2019s justice and the Spirit\u2019s reconciling peace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thanks be to you, Lord Jesus Christ, most merciful redeemer, for the countless blessings and benefits you give. May we know you more clearly, love you more dearly, and follow you more nearly, day by day praising you, with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First Reading: 1 Samuel 3:1-20<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

At a time when visions are rare and unexpected, the Lord comes to Samuel and calls him to speak the divine word. Though just a boy, Samuel responds to God obediently, as Eli the priest has taught him to respond. This marks the beginning of Samuel\u2019s prophetic ministry.<\/em><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

1<\/sup>Now the boy Samuel was ministering to the Lord under Eli. The word of the Lord was rare in those days; visions were not widespread.
\u2003 2<\/sup>At that time Eli, whose eyesight had begun to grow dim so that he could not see, was lying down in his room; 3<\/sup>the lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was lying down in the temple of the Lord, where the ark of God was. 4<\/sup>Then the Lord called, \u201cSamuel! Samuel!\u201d and he said, \u201cHere I am!\u201d 5<\/sup>and ran to Eli, and said, \u201cHere I am, for you called me.\u201d But he said, \u201cI did not call; lie down again.\u201d So he went and lay down. 6<\/sup>The Lord called again, \u201cSamuel!\u201d Samuel got up and went to Eli, and said, \u201cHere I am, for you called me.\u201d But he said, \u201cI did not call, my son; lie down again.\u201d 7<\/sup>Now Samuel did not yet know the Lord, and the word of the Lord had not yet been revealed to him. 8<\/sup>The Lord called Samuel again, a third time. And he got up and went to Eli, and said, \u201cHere I am, for you called me.\u201d Then Eli perceived that the Lord was calling the boy. 9<\/sup>Therefore Eli said to Samuel, \u201cGo, lie down; and if he calls you, you shall say, \u2018Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.\u2019\u2006\u201d So Samuel went and lay down in his place.
\u2003 10<\/sup>Now the Lord came and stood there, calling as before, \u201cSamuel! Samuel!\u201d And Samuel said, \u201cSpeak, for your servant is listening.\u201d 11<\/sup>Then the Lord said to Samuel, \u201cSee, I am about to do something in Israel that will make both ears of anyone who hears of it tingle. 12<\/sup>On that day I will fulfill against Eli all that I have spoken concerning his house, from beginning to end. 13<\/sup>For I have told him that I am about to punish his house forever, for the iniquity that he knew, because his sons were blaspheming God, and he did not restrain them. 14<\/sup>Therefore I swear to the house of Eli that the iniquity of Eli\u2019s house shall not be expiated by sacrifice or offering forever.\u201d
\u2003 15<\/sup>Samuel lay there until morning; then he opened the doors of the house of the Lord. Samuel was afraid to tell the vision to Eli. 16<\/sup>But Eli called Samuel and said, \u201cSamuel, my son.\u201d He said, \u201cHere I am.\u201d 17<\/sup>Eli said, \u201cWhat was it that he told you? Do not hide it from me. May God do so to you and more also, if you hide anything from me of all that he told you.\u201d 18<\/sup>So Samuel told him everything and hid nothing from him. Then he said, \u201cIt is the Lord; let him do what seems good to him.\u201d
\u2003 19<\/sup>As Samuel grew up, the Lord was with him and let none of his words fall to the ground. 20<\/sup>And all Israel from Dan to Beer-sheba knew that Samuel was a trustworthy prophet of the Lord.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gospel: John 1:43-51<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In John\u2019s gospel, Jesus\u2019 ministry begins with the call of disciples, who then bring others to Jesus. Philip\u2019s friend Nathanael moves from skepticism to faith when he accepts the invitation to \u201cCome and see.\u201d<\/em><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

43<\/sup>The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee. He found Philip and said to him, \u201cFollow me.\u201d 44<\/sup>Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. 45<\/sup>Philip found Nathanael and said to him, \u201cWe have found him about whom Moses in the law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus son of Joseph from Nazareth.\u201d 46<\/sup>Nathanael said to him, \u201cCan anything good come out of Nazareth?\u201d Philip said to him, \u201cCome and see.\u201d 47<\/sup>When Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him, he said of him, \u201cHere is truly an Israelite in whom there is no deceit!\u201d 48<\/sup>Nathanael asked him, \u201cWhere did you get to know me?\u201d Jesus answered, \u201cI saw you under the fig tree before Philip called you.\u201d 49<\/sup>Nathanael replied, \u201cRabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!\u201d 50<\/sup>Jesus answered, \u201cDo you believe because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than these.\u201d 51<\/sup>And he said to him, \u201cVery truly, I tell you, you will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prayers of Intercession<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Guided by Christ made known to the nations, let us offer our prayers for the church, the world, and all people in need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the body of Christ gathered throughout the world and for all servants of the gospel, that following Jesus, the church lives out its calling every day, let us pray.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Have mercy, O God.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

For our nation. You show us the splendor of diversity and the beauty of unity in your own divine life. Make us, who came from many nations with many languages, a united people that delights in our many different gifts. Defend our liberties, and give those whom we have entrusted with authority the spirit of wisdom, that there might be justice and peace in our land, let us pray.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Have mercy, O God.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the well-being of creation, for plants and animals, and for all that God has marvelously made, that we serve as wise stewards of Earth, our home, let us pray.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Have mercy, O God.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

For police officers and firefighters, for attorneys and paralegals, for peacekeepers and military personnel, and for the leaders of governments, that they provide protection to all people, especially the most vulnerable, let us pray.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Have mercy, O God.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

For those lacking food or shelter, for those who are sick or grieving, and for those who are imprisoned or homebound especially Ricky Lindquist; Tom, Pam, Mandy and Eddy Neu; Katy, Audrey, and Olivia Leyendecker; Susan Leyendecker; Helen Schubert; Kristine Mayer; Mariah Pearson; and Dan Wolever, that God console all who suffer, let us pray.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Have mercy, O God.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

For our neighborhoods, for visitors joining us for the first time, however that may be, or returning, and for those absent from our assembly, that all who seek to know God are nourished by word and sacrament, let us pray.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In thanksgiving for the saints who have gone before us especially Louise Larson and John Leaf, that their lives give us a vision of the gospel in action, let us pray.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Merciful God, hear the prayers of your people, spoken or silent, for the sake of the one who dwells among us, your Son, Jesus Christ our Savior.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
