Sunday, November 7, 2021<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Heyer was the first missionary sent out by American Lutherans. After teaching at Gettysburg College and Seminary he was assigned to the Andhra region of India. A worker among the Tamil people on the southeast coast of India, Ziegenbalg was opposed both by local Hindus and by Danish authorities who favored a different missionary style. He was known for caring about the welfare of the whole person. Nommensen was born in northern Germany and was sent to Sumatra as a Lutheran missionary. Working among the Batak people, he translated the scriptures into their language, and honored their native culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meditation<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Of all three years of the lectionary cycle, this year\u2019s All Saints readings have the most tears. Isaiah and Revelation look forward to the day when God will wipe away all tears; in John\u2019s gospel, Jesus weeps along with Mary and all the gathered mourners before he demonstrates his power over death. On All Saints Day we celebrate the victory won for all the faithful dead, but we grieve for our beloved dead as well, knowing that God honors our tears. We bring our grief to the table and find there a foretaste of Isaiah\u2019s feast to come.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Confession and Forgiveness<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In the name of the Father, and of the \u2629 Son, and of the Holy Spirit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Amen.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Have mercy on us, O God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We confess that we have sinned against you<\/strong> and against our neighbor.<\/strong> We have built walls instead of tables<\/strong> and have turned away the stranger.<\/strong> We have sought glory for ourselves<\/strong> and have treasured that which does not satisfy.<\/strong> Help us to love as you love,<\/strong> to welcome those you send,<\/strong> and to treasure mercy and justice.<\/strong> Turn us from our ways to your ways,<\/strong> and free us to serve those in need. Prayer of the Day<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Almighty God, you have knit your people together in one communion in the mystical body of your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Grant us grace to follow your blessed saints in lives of faith and commitment, and to know the inexpressible joys you have prepared for those who love you, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Amen.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

First Reading: Isaiah 25:6-9<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Isaiah sees a vision of the end of days, when God will gather all people on God\u2019s holy mountain and will prepare for them a rich feast. At this banquet God will wipe the tears from all eyes. And there will be no more sorrow, for God will destroy death itself.<\/em><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u20036<\/sup>On this mountain the Lord of hosts will make for all peoples
\u2003\u2003a feast of rich food, a feast of well-aged wines,
\u2003\u2003of rich food filled with marrow, of well-aged wines strained clear.
\u20037<\/sup>And he will destroy on this mountain
\u2003\u2003the shroud that is cast over all peoples,
\u2003\u2003the sheet that is spread over all nations;
\u2003\u20038<\/sup>he will swallow up death forever.
\u2003Then the Lord God will wipe away the tears from all faces,
\u2003\u2003and the disgrace of his people he will take away from all the earth,
\u2003\u2003for the Lord has spoken.
\u20039<\/sup>It will be said on that day,
\u2003\u2003Lo, this is our God; we have waited for him, so that he might save us.
\u2003\u2003This is the Lord for whom we have waited;
\u2003\u2003let us be glad and rejoice in his salvation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Second Reading: Revelation 21:1-6a<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Here is a vision of the new heaven and new earth in which God resides fully with God\u2019s people so that mourning, despair, and pain have been eradicated. These renewing words from the God who spans all of time are trustworthy and true.<\/em><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

1<\/sup>I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. 2<\/sup>And I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. 3<\/sup>And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying,
\u2003\u201cSee, the home of God is among mortals.
\u2003He will dwell with them;
\u2003they will be his peoples,
\u2003and God himself will be with them;
\u20034<\/sup>he will wipe every tear from their eyes.
\u2003Death will be no more;
\u2003mourning and crying and pain will be no more,
\u2003for the first things have passed away.\u201d
\u2003 5<\/sup>And the one who was seated on the throne said, \u201cSee, I am making all things new.\u201d Also he said, \u201cWrite this, for these words are trustworthy and true.\u201d 6a<\/sup>Then he said to me, \u201cIt is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gospel: John 11:32-44<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Through the raising of Lazarus, Jesus offers the world a vision of the life to come, when death and weeping will be no more.<\/em><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

32<\/sup>When Mary came where Jesus was and saw him, she knelt at his feet and said to him, \u201cLord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.\u201d 33<\/sup>When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her also weeping, he was greatly disturbed in spirit and deeply moved. 34<\/sup>He said, \u201cWhere have you laid him?\u201d They said to him, \u201cLord, come and see.\u201d 35<\/sup>Jesus began to weep. 36<\/sup>So the Jews said, \u201cSee how he loved him!\u201d 37<\/sup>But some of them said, \u201cCould not he who opened the eyes of the blind man have kept this man from dying?\u201d

\u2003 38<\/sup>Then Jesus, again greatly disturbed, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone was lying against it. 39<\/sup>Jesus said, \u201cTake away the stone.\u201d Martha, the sister of the dead man, said to him, \u201cLord, already there is a stench because he has been dead four days.\u201d 40<\/sup>Jesus said to her, \u201cDid I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?\u201d 41<\/sup>So they took away the stone. And Jesus looked upward and said, \u201cFather, I thank you for having heard me. 42<\/sup>I knew that you always hear me, but I have said this for the sake of the crowd standing here, so that they may believe that you sent me.\u201d 43<\/sup>When he had said this, he cried with a loud voice, \u201cLazarus, come out!\u201d 44<\/sup>The dead man came out, his hands and feet bound with strips of cloth, and his face wrapped in a cloth. Jesus said to them, \u201cUnbind him, and let him go.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eternal God, you hold firm amid the changes of this world. Hear us now as we pray for the church, the world, and everyone in need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Merciful God, we give thanks for all missionaries who have brought your message of hope to new communities and wiped tears away especially John Christian Frederick Heyer, Bartholomaeus Ziegenbalg, Ludwig Nommensen whom we commemorate today. Continue to raise up courageous missionaries to share your gospel of hope. Hear us, O God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your mercy is great.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Creating God, we praise you for abundant harvests and the goodness of creation. Create communities of care for your earth so that all land, water, and soil will be celebrated and cherished by future generations of saints. Hear us, O God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

God of healing, we give you thanks for health care workers who labor around the clock to answer cries for help.
