Handbell Choir<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Procession with Palms<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">*Processional Gospel: Luke 19:28-4<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Entrance into the final days<\/em><em><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>28<\/sup>After he had said this, [Jesus] went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem.<br>\u2003<sup>29<\/sup>When he had come near Bethphage and Bethany, at the place called the Mount of Olives, he sent two of the disciples, <sup>30<\/sup>saying, \u201cGo into the village ahead of you, and as you enter it you will find tied there a colt that has never been ridden. Untie it and bring it here. <sup>31<\/sup>If anyone asks you, \u2018Why are you untying it?\u2019 just say this, \u2018The Lord needs it.\u2019\u2006\u201d <sup>32<\/sup>So those who were sent departed and found it as he had told them. <sup>33<\/sup>As they were untying the colt, its owners asked them, \u201cWhy are you untying the colt?\u201d <sup>34<\/sup>They said, \u201cThe Lord needs it.\u201d <sup>35<\/sup>Then they brought it to Jesus; and after throwing their cloaks on the colt, they set Jesus on it. <sup>36<\/sup>As he rode along, people kept spreading their cloaks on the road. <sup>37<\/sup>As he was now approaching the path down from the Mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to praise God joyfully with a loud voice for all the deeds of power that they had seen, <sup>38<\/sup>saying,<br>\u2003\u201cBlessed is the king<br>\u2003\u2003who comes in the name of the Lord!<br>\u2003Peace in heaven,<br>\u2003\u2003and glory in the highest heaven!\u201d<br><sup>39<\/sup>Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him, \u201cTeacher, order your disciples to stop.\u201d <sup>40<\/sup>He answered, \u201cI tell you, if these were silent, the stones would shout out.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Blessing of the Palms<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Processional Hymn:<\/strong> ELW #344- &#8220;All Glory, Laud and Honor,&#8221; all verses. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Prayer of the Day<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Everlasting God, in your endless love for the human race you sent our Lord Jesus Christ to take on our nature and to suffer death on the cross. In your mercy enable us to share in his obedience to your will and in the glorious victory of his resurrection, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Amen.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">First Reading: Isaiah 50:4-9a<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><em>This text, the third of the four Servant Songs in Isaiah, speaks of the servant\u2019s obedience amid persecution. Though the servant has been variously understood as the prophet himself or a remnant of faithful Israel, Christians have often recognized the figure of Christ in these poems.<\/em><em><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2003<sup>4<\/sup>The Lord God has given me<br>\u2003\u2003the tongue of a teacher,<br>\u2003that I may know how to sustain<br>\u2003\u2003the weary with a word.<br>\u2003Morning by morning he wakens\u2014<br>\u2003\u2003wakens my ear<br>\u2003\u2003to listen as those who are taught.<br>\u2003<sup>5<\/sup>The Lord God has opened my ear,<br>\u2003\u2003and I was not rebellious,<br>\u2003\u2003I did not turn backward.<br>\u2003<sup>6<\/sup>I gave my back to those who struck me,<br>\u2003\u2003and my cheeks to those who pulled out the beard;<br>\u2003I did not hide my face<br>\u2003\u2003from insult and spitting.<br><br>\u2003<sup>7<\/sup>The Lord God helps me;<br>\u2003\u2003therefore I have not been disgraced;<br>\u2003therefore I have set my face like flint,<br>\u2003\u2003and I know that I shall not be put to shame;<br>\u2003\u2003<sup>8<\/sup>he who vindicates me is near.<br>\u2003Who will contend with me?<br>\u2003\u2003Let us stand up together.<br>\u2003Who are my adversaries?<br>\u2003\u2003Let them confront me.<br>\u2003<sup>9a<\/sup>It is the Lord God who helps me;<br>\u2003\u2003who will declare me guilty?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Gospel: Luke 23:1-49<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Through the teachings and events of the passion story we see and hear the great contradictions that characterize the coming of God\u2019s reign. The leader serves the followers, proud Peter is revealed in his cowardice, and Jesus\u2014the innocent bringer of life\u2014is arrested, beaten, executed, and buried.<\/em><em><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>1<\/sup>Then the assembly rose as a body and brought Jesus before Pilate. <sup>2<\/sup>They began to accuse him, saying, \u201cWe found this man perverting our nation, forbidding us to pay taxes to the emperor, and saying that he himself is the Messiah, a king.\u201d <sup>3<\/sup>Then Pilate asked him, \u201cAre you the king of the Jews?\u201d He answered, \u201cYou say so.\u201d <sup>4<\/sup>Then Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowds, \u201cI find no basis for an accusation against this man.\u201d <sup>5<\/sup>But they were insistent and said, \u201cHe stirs up the people by teaching throughout all Judea, from Galilee where he began even to this place.\u201d<br><br>\u2003<sup>6<\/sup>When Pilate heard this, he asked whether the man was a Galilean. <sup>7<\/sup>And when he learned that he was under Herod\u2019s jurisdiction, he sent him off to Herod, who was himself in Jerusalem at that time. <sup>8<\/sup>When Herod saw Jesus, he was very glad, for he had been wanting to see him for a long time, because he had heard about him and was hoping to see him perform some sign. <sup>9<\/sup>He questioned him at some length, but Jesus gave him no answer. <sup>10<\/sup>The chief priests and the scribes stood by, vehemently accusing him. <sup>11<\/sup>Even Herod with his soldiers treated him with contempt and mocked him; then he put an elegant robe on him, and sent him back to Pilate. <sup>12<\/sup>That same day Herod and Pilate became friends with each other; before this they had been enemies.<br><br>\u2003<sup>13<\/sup>Pilate then called together the chief priests, the leaders, and the people, <sup>14<\/sup>and said to them, \u201cYou brought me this man as one who was perverting the people; and here I have examined him in your presence and have not found this man guilty of any of your charges against him. <sup>15<\/sup>Neither has Herod, for he sent him back to us. Indeed, he has done nothing to deserve death. <sup>16<\/sup>I will therefore have him flogged and release him.\u201d<br>\u2003<sup>18<\/sup>Then they all shouted out together, \u201cAway with this fellow! Release Barabbas for us!\u201d <sup>19<\/sup>(This was a man who had been put in prison for an insurrection that had taken place in the city, and for murder.) <sup>20<\/sup>Pilate, wanting to release Jesus, addressed them again; <sup>21<\/sup>but they kept shouting, \u201cCrucify, crucify him!\u201d <sup>22<\/sup>A third time he said to them, \u201cWhy, what evil has he done? I have found in him no ground for the sentence of death; I will therefore have him flogged and then release him.\u201d <sup>23<\/sup>But they kept urgently demanding with loud shouts that he should be crucified; and their voices prevailed. <sup>24<\/sup>So Pilate gave his verdict that their demand should be granted. <sup>25<\/sup>He released the man they asked for, the one who had been put in prison for insurrection and murder, and he handed Jesus over as they wished.<br><br>\u2003<sup>26<\/sup>As they led him away, they seized a man, Simon of Cyrene, who was coming from the country, and they laid the cross on him, and made him carry it behind Jesus. <sup>27<\/sup>A great number of the people followed him, and among them were women who were beating their breasts and wailing for him. <sup>28<\/sup>But Jesus turned to them and said, \u201cDaughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me, but weep for yourselves and for your children. <sup>29<\/sup>For the days are surely coming when they will say, \u2018Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that never bore, and the breasts that never nursed.\u2019 <sup>30<\/sup>Then they will begin to say to the mountains, \u2018Fall on us\u2019; and to the hills, \u2018Cover us.\u2019 <sup>31<\/sup>For if they do this when the wood is green, what will happen when it is dry?\u201d<br>\u2003<sup>32<\/sup>Two others also, who were criminals, were led away to be put to death with him. <sup>33<\/sup>When they came to the place that is called The Skull, they crucified Jesus there with the criminals, one on his right and one on his left. <sup>34<\/sup>\u27e6Then Jesus said, \u201cFather, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing.\u201d\u27e7 And they cast lots to divide his clothing. <sup>35<\/sup>And the people stood by, watching; but the leaders scoffed at him, saying, \u201cHe saved others; let him save himself if he is the Messiah of God, his chosen one!\u201d <sup>36<\/sup>The soldiers also mocked him, coming up and offering him sour wine, <sup>37<\/sup>and saying, \u201cIf you are the King of the Jews, save yourself!\u201d <sup>38<\/sup>There was also an inscription over him, \u201cThis is the King of the Jews.\u201d<br>\u2003<sup>39<\/sup>One of the criminals who were hanged there kept deriding him and saying, \u201cAre you not the Messiah? Save yourself and us!\u201d <sup>40<\/sup>But the other rebuked him, saying, \u201cDo you not fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? <sup>41<\/sup>And we indeed have been condemned justly, for we are getting what we deserve for our deeds, but this man has done nothing wrong.\u201d <sup>42<\/sup>Then he said, \u201cJesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.\u201d <sup>43<\/sup>He replied, \u201cTruly I tell you, today you will be with me in Paradise.\u201d<br><br>\u2003<sup>44<\/sup>It was now about noon, and darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon, <sup>45<\/sup>while the sun\u2019s light failed; and the curtain of the temple was torn in two. <sup>46<\/sup>Then Jesus, crying with a loud voice, said, \u201cFather, into your hands I commend my spirit.\u201d Having said this, he breathed his last. <sup>47<\/sup>When the centurion saw what had taken place, he praised God and said, \u201cCertainly this man was innocent.\u201d <sup>48<\/sup>And when all the crowds who had gathered there for this spectacle saw what had taken place, they returned home, beating their breasts. <sup>49<\/sup>But all his acquaintances, including the women who had followed him from Galilee, stood at a distance, watching these things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Sermon:<\/strong> Pastor Chris Lee<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Hymn of the Day: <\/strong>ELW 343- &#8220;My Song is Love Unknown,&#8221; all verses. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>HOLY BAPTISM<\/strong> service for Levi Luther Keuning<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Prayers of Intercession<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Drawn close to the heart of God, we offer these prayers for the church, the world, and all who are in need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We pray for the church, called to follow Jesus in the way of the cross. Make us unflinching servants of the gospel. Deliver us from hardship as we confront the forces of injustice and practice radical compassion. Merciful God,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>receive our prayer.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the earth and all its inhabitants, created in love: Train us to recognize your divine goodness in the world around us. Rouse in us a reverence for creation, that we take greater care of its resources.
