When she was about thirty years old, Julian (or Juliana) reported visions that she later compiled into a book, Sixteen Revelations of Divine Love, now a classic of medieval mysticism. The visions declared that love was the meaning of religious experience, provided by Christ who is love, for the purpose of love.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Also known as Victor Maurus, this native of the northwest African nation of Mauritania was a soldier in the Roman Praetorian Guard. Under the persecution of Maximian, Victor died for his faith at Milan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meditation<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The gift of new life, of eternal life, is the gift of the risen Christ. It is the promise of Jesus. It was true for Dorcas in Joppa. It was true for those \u201cwho have come out of the great ordeal\u201d in the Revelation vision. It is true for us and for all the baptized: Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thanksgiving for Baptism<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Alleluia! Christ is risen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Christ is risen indeed. Alleluia!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the waters of baptism, we have passed over from death to life with Jesus Christ, and we are a new creation. For this saving mystery, and for this water, let us bless God, who was, who is, and who is to come.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We thank you, God, for your river of life, flowing freely from your throne: through the earth, through the city, through every living thing. You rescued Noah and his family from the flood; You opened wide the sea for the Israelites. Now in these waters you flood us with mercy, and our sin is drowned forever. You open the gate of righteousness and we pass safely through. In Jesus Christ, you calm and trouble the waters. You nourish us and enclose us in safety. You call us forth and send us out. In lush and barren places, you are with us. You have become our salvation. Now breathe upon this water and awaken your church once more. Claim us again as your beloved and holy people. Quench our thirst; cleanse our hearts; wipe away every tear. To you, our Beginning and our End, our Shepherd and Lamb, be honor, glory, praise, and thanksgiving, now and forever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

O God of peace, you brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus Christ, the great shepherd of the sheep. By the blood of your eternal covenant, make us complete in everything good that we may do your will, and work among us all that is well-pleasing in your sight, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First Reading: Acts 9:36-43<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Dorcas was a faithful and devoted woman of charity in the community of Joppa. Her kindness and her work with clothing were well-known, especially to the widows in town. When she fell ill and died, Peter raised her back to life through the power of prayer.<\/em><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

36<\/sup>Now in Joppa there was a disciple whose name was Tabitha, which in Greek is Dorcas. She was devoted to good works and acts of charity. 37<\/sup>At that time she became ill and died. When they had washed her, they laid her in a room upstairs. 38<\/sup>Since Lydda was near Joppa, the disciples, who heard that Peter was there, sent two men to him with the request, \u201cPlease come to us without delay.\u201d 39<\/sup>So Peter got up and went with them; and when he arrived, they took him to the room upstairs. All the widows stood beside him, weeping and showing tunics and other clothing that Dorcas had made while she was with them. 40<\/sup>Peter put all of them outside, and then he knelt down and prayed. He turned to the body and said, \u201cTabitha, get up.\u201d Then she opened her eyes, and seeing Peter, she sat up. 41<\/sup>He gave her his hand and helped her up. Then calling the saints and widows, he showed her to be alive. 42<\/sup>This became known throughout Joppa, and many believed in the Lord. 43<\/sup>Meanwhile he stayed in Joppa for some time with a certain Simon, a tanner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Second Reading: Revelation 7:9-17<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Christ is the shepherd who leads his faithful to springs of the water of life. Christ is also the lamb who vanquishes sin and suffering.<\/em><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

9<\/sup>After this I looked, and there was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, robed in white, with palm branches in their hands. 10<\/sup>They cried out in a loud voice, saying,
\u2003\u201cSalvation belongs to our God who is seated on the throne, and to the Lamb!\u201d
11<\/sup>And all the angels stood around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures, and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, 12<\/sup>singing,
\u2003\u201cAmen! Blessing and glory and wisdom
\u2003and thanksgiving and honor
\u2003and power and might
\u2003be to our God forever and ever! Amen.\u201d
\u200313<\/sup>Then one of the elders addressed me, saying, \u201cWho are these, robed in white, and where have they come from?\u201d 14<\/sup>I said to him, \u201cSir, you are the one that knows.\u201d Then he said to me, \u201cThese are they who have come out of the great ordeal; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.
\u200315<\/sup>For this reason they are before the throne of God,
\u2003\u2003and worship him day and night within his temple,
\u2003\u2003and the one who is seated on the throne will shelter them.
\u200316<\/sup>They will hunger no more, and thirst no more;
\u2003\u2003the sun will not strike them,
\u2003\u2003nor any scorching heat;
\u200317<\/sup>for the Lamb at the center of the throne will be their shepherd,

Gospel: John 10:22-30<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Jesus responds to questions about his identity with the remarkable claim that he and the Father are one. Those who understand this are his sheep; they hear his voice, follow, and will never be snatched from his hand.<\/em><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

22<\/sup>At that time the festival of the Dedication took place in Jerusalem. It was winter, 23<\/sup>and Jesus was walking in the temple, in the portico of Solomon. 24<\/sup>So the Jews gathered around him and said to him, \u201cHow long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Messiah, tell us plainly.\u201d 25<\/sup>Jesus answered, \u201cI have told you, and you do not believe. The works that I do in my Father\u2019s name testify to me; 26<\/sup>but you do not believe, because you do not belong to my sheep. 27<\/sup>My sheep hear my voice. I know them, and they follow me. 28<\/sup>I give them eternal life, and they will never perish. No one will snatch them out of my hand. 29<\/sup>What my Father has given me is greater than all else, and no one can snatch it out of the Father\u2019s hand. 30<\/sup>The Father and I are one.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Set free from captivity to sin and death, we pray to the God of resurrection for the church, people in need, and all of creation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gentle Shepherd, enable your church to respond to the voice of Jesus. Give us unfailing trust, unafraid to join in Jesus\u2019 work of renewing all things. God, in your mercy,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

hear our prayer.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Feed your people at the table of creation. Prepare a safe place for those whose environments are dangerous or unhealthy, especially those making difficult journeys. Prosper your creation for the sake of every living thing. God, in your mercy,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

hear our prayer.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Warm the hearts of all who celebrate and all who mourn on Mother\u2019s Day. Accompany those yearning to be mothers. Help us to heal from broken family relationships and open us to receive your nurturing love from all who serve mothering roles in our lives. God, in your mercy,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
